US Trial to Begin Over Alleged Social Media Addiction Targeting Children

(MENAFN) Opening arguments are scheduled to start Monday in a US trial accusing social media companies of deliberately designing products to addict children, according to reports. Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg and YouTube chief Neal Mohan are among executives expected to testify.

The trial, which was postponed from late January due to a defense lawyer’s illness, features a jury of six women and six men, and proceedings could continue through March, as reported by Bloomberg.

Adam Mosseri, head of Instagram—the photo- and video-sharing platform owned by Meta—is expected to testify during the first week, followed by Zuckerberg, who could take the stand in Los Angeles as early as next week.

The lawsuit, filed by the Social Media Victims Law Center in Seattle, focuses on a 20-year-old California woman who claims that over a decade of social media use caused her anxiety, depression, and body dysmorphia.

Meta’s legal team plans to reject links between social media and teen mental health issues while emphasizing the positive effects of their platforms, according to statements from company lawyers cited by Bloomberg. In a January blog post, Meta argued that blaming social media alone for teen mental health challenges “oversimplifies a serious issue” and described the lawsuit’s claims as inaccurate.

The case comes amid growing global scrutiny, as multiple countries have introduced restrictions or bans on social media use by minors, with numerous studies highlighting potential connections between social media usage and mental health problems among young people.
